So the idea is to make the final etches into a hand bound book, the title of which would be "He Visited", referring to the title of the R.D story "The Visitor" of which this is an adaptation. Each double page spread would then read with the text on the left hand page and the image on the right. It would be as follows:
he indulged

he refused

he provoked

he opposed
he rejected

he prostrated

he gorged

he leered

he anticipated

he suffered

he deserved...
Maybe a bit dramatic at the end? Just trying to keep it simple.
I think the etchings are looking great, and I love the simplicity of the text. I suppose the question is whether you expect the viewer to know the original story this is an adaptation of, and if not, what, for the viewer/reader is the narrative connection between one 'He...' image and the next?
ReplyDeleteWell avid follower, these are not the etchings, these are just the sketches, I will hopefully be posting the final etches at the end of the week.
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question I would say that I do not expect there to be any readable connection to the original text. I feel I have adapted it far enough away from the story for it to stand by itself. The connection between one image and the next, accompanied by the words, is to be interpreted by you the viewer. I'm not going to make it that easy for you.
The simplicity is great, I love the repetitive nature and corrolation to the title, I'm not bothered that I don't know the full story, its interesting enough to imagine whats going on, and the reductive text enhances that.
ReplyDeleteThere are a couple of images that don't tie into the text for me; He Opposed - but he's being hugged - he doesn't look like he's opposing anything, he just looks quite resigned to the fact. He Rejected, where he's being dragged towards a burning house by some mystery figure? I don't see what he is rejecting, other than going to the buring house (and who would blame him, it's on fire!).
Also there seems to be quite a jump between him leering, and then lying on the ground anticipating his end, i.e. did he rub someone up the wrong way, or what? I don't know what he's anticipating.
I'm all for the drama at the end, the "he deserved" ties it together, it confirms his bad character, and that he got his comeuppance.
